Promoting Your Community

Great communities grow when people know about them. The Promotion tool lets you create real, printable materials — posters and business cards — with QR codes that link directly to your community or its public content. Pin a poster in a cafe, hand out cards at a market, or leave them at a community centre. It's a simple way to bring people from the physical world into your digital community.

Getting to the Promotion Page

You'll find the Promotion page in your community's side menu — click Promote to open it.

You need to be a member of the community to access this page.

The Three Tabs

The Promotion page is organised into three tabs: Prints, Resources, and Online.

Prints

This is where you design and print your materials. You'll see:

  • Title — a text field pre-filled with your community's name. Edit it to say whatever you like.
  • Footer — the call-to-action text below the QR code. Defaults to "Join us!" but you can change it to anything.
  • Print mode — choose between two formats:
    • Full Page — an A4-sized poster (210mm x 297mm) with a large QR code in the centre, bold title, and decorative elements (use “Fit to page” if you print on US Letter)
    • Business Cards — 10 cards per A4 page, each with a small QR code, title, and footer. Cut along the guides after printing.

Changes to the title and footer update the preview in real time, so you can see exactly what you'll get.

When you're happy with the design, you have two options:

  • Preview — opens a scaled-down preview in a pop-up window so you can check everything before committing to paper
  • Print — opens your browser's print dialog. From there, choose your printer or save as PDF.

Resources

By default, the QR code links to your community's main page. But you can also promote specific public content — an upcoming event or a recommended place.

The Resources tab shows a searchable list of all your community's public events and places. Select one and the tool switches back to the Prints tab with everything updated:

  • The title changes to the resource's name
  • The footer updates to a resource-specific message (e.g., "Scan to learn more!" for events)
  • The QR code now links directly to that event or place
  • The colours adjust to match the resource type

This is particularly useful for promoting a specific event — print a poster with the event name, date, and a QR code that takes people straight to the details.

Online

The Online tab provides a digital alternative to printed materials. Use it to share an invite link that people can open on their phone or computer — handy when printing isn't practical.

What the QR Code Links To

The QR code always links to a public link that anyone can open, even without an account:

  • Community — links to your community's public page, with a referral tracker so you can see how many people joined through your materials
  • Event — links to the event's public detail page
  • Place — links to the place's public detail page

Design

The printed materials use a bold, high-contrast style with thick borders, geometric decorations, and strong typography. Colours are applied automatically based on what you're promoting.

Tips for Effective Promotion

  • Keep the title short and punchy. "Sunday Market — Fresh & Local" works better on a poster than a long description. You can always edit it to something more compelling than the default name.
  • Use business cards for casual sharing. They're easy to hand out at events, leave on notice boards, or tuck into a neighbour's letterbox.
  • Promote specific events, not just the community. A poster for "Community Cleanup — Saturday 10am" with a QR code to the event page is more actionable than a generic community poster.
  • Print to PDF first. If you want to share digitally or review before printing on paper, use your browser's "Save as PDF" option in the print dialog.
  • Place posters where your audience gathers. Cafes, libraries, community centres, gyms, and local shops are all great spots — ask permission first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I promote content that isn't public? A: No. Only public events and places appear in the Resources tab. Members-only content can't be promoted because the QR code links to a public link that anyone can visit.

Q: Can I customise the colours or add my own logo? A: Colours are set automatically based on the content type. Custom logos and colour choices aren't available yet, but the title and footer are fully editable.

Q: Does the QR code expire? A: No. The QR code links to a permanent link. As long as the community, event, or place exists, the link will work.

Q: Can I track how many people scanned my QR code? A: Community promotions include a referral tracker. You can see referral stats on your community's Members page. Individual event and place promotions don't currently include tracking.

Q: What if the print dialog doesn't appear? A: On some devices — particularly iPhones running as an installed app — the print dialog may not open automatically. In that case, use your browser's Share menu and choose "Print" from there.

Q: Do I need a colour printer? A: The materials look best in colour, but they're designed with strong black borders and bold text, so they still work well in black and white.
